CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most prestigious appellations in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, renowned for producing powerful, complex and age-worthy wines. Located just north of the city of Avignon, the region gained international recognition when it became one of the first official AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) appellations in France in 1936.
The vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are famous for their distinctive galets roulés (large rounded stones), which absorb heat during the day and release it at night, helping grapes achieve optimal ripeness in the Mediterranean climate. This unique terroir contributes to the richness, concentration and depth that define the region’s wines.
The appellation allows up to 13 grape varieties, though most wines are dominated by Grenache, often blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. These blends produce full-bodied reds with flavours of blackberry, plum, spice, dried herbs (garrigue), leather and pepper, supported by firm tannins and excellent ageing potential.
While the region is best known for its powerful red wines, a small amount of white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is also produced, typically from varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc, offering rich textures and complex aromas of stone fruit, citrus and flowers.
Today, Châteauneuf-du-Pape remains a benchmark for Southern Rhône wines, combining centuries of tradition with exceptional terroir expression.
