The 2016 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Sanctus Sanctorum Magnum (1500ml) is a rare 100% Grenache from vines planted in 1905 in the celebrated La Crau lieu-dit. Produced only in exceptional vintages and exclusively bottled in magnum, it shows black cherry and raspberry with dark rose, liquorice, dried herbs and exotic spice.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated yet finely balanced, with rich Grenache fruit, velvety texture and ultra-fine tannins. Maturation in demi-muids adds structure while allowing the old-vine fruit and mineral character to remain prominent, leading to an exceptionally long finish.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for collectors seeking a distinctive old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the 1.5L magnum format. The 2016 vintage is entering its drinking window but has the structure to continue developing through approximately 2035 and beyond. Ideal with roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, venison or herb-roasted meats.
