CHATEAU PICHON LONGUEVILLE COMTESSE DE LALANDE

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a prestigious Second Growth estate located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France. Classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the château is renowned for producing wines that blend power with finesse, often described as among the most elegant in Pauillac. Positioned just south of Château Latour, it benefits from prime terroir with deep gravel soils over clay, ideal for the cultivation of Bordeaux varietals. The estate spans approximately 85 hectares, with a portion extending into Saint-Julien, and has long been admired for its consistency and refinement.

The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Historically, the wine featured a higher percentage of Merlot, which contributed to its signature suppleness and aromatic charm. In recent years, there has been a shift toward a more Cabernet-focused blend, bringing additional structure and longevity to the wines. Pichon Comtesse is known for its richly layered aromatics, polished tannins, and a velvety texture that balances Pauillac’s typical depth and strength with a graceful, almost “feminine” elegance.

The château’s roots date back to the 17th century, but it acquired its current identity in the 19th century under Virginie de Pichon Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande. In 2006, the estate was purchased by the Rouzaud family, owners of Champagne Louis Roederer, who invested heavily in both vineyard and winery. Under their stewardship, Pichon Comtesse has embraced organic and biodynamic farming and adopted a precision-focused, sustainable approach to viticulture and winemaking.

In addition to the grand vin, the estate produces a second wine, Réserve de la Comtesse, offering a more approachable and earlier-drinking version of the estate’s refined style. Today, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is considered one of the great “super seconds” — Second Growths that often rival First Growths in quality and prestige. With its distinctive combination of terroir expression, modern viticulture, and historical depth, it remains one of the benchmark producers of Left Bank Bordeaux.
