The 2024 Stargazer KURA is a vibrant cool-climate blend of 75% Shiraz and 25% Pinot Noir, inspired by the classic Hunter Valley Shiraz–Pinot Noir style but reimagined through the lens of Tasmania's Coal River Valley. Crafted by Samantha Connew, the Shiraz comes from the north-facing Marengo Vineyard near Richmond, while the Pinot Noir is sourced from mature vines on the opposite side of the valley. The parcels are fermented separately with indigenous yeasts before spending ten months in seasoned French oak puncheons, allowing each variety to retain its individuality while creating a beautifully harmonious blend. The nose is wonderfully aromatic, revealing roasted blueberries, black cherries and dried cherries layered with violets, rosemary stem, pepperberry, Dutch liquorice and Chinese five spice, creating a wine of remarkable fragrance and complexity.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky, feather-fine tannins and vibrant natural acidity that give the wine exceptional freshness and poise. Juicy blue and red berry fruits are complemented by savoury spice, subtle herbal notes and a gentle mineral edge, leading to a long, energetic finish with a pleasantly savoury snap. The Shiraz contributes depth and spice, while the Pinot Noir brings perfume, elegance and finesse, resulting in a beautifully balanced red that is both immediately approachable and capable of rewarding short to medium-term cellaring. It was awarded 93 points by the Halliday Wine Companion.
Ben’s Recommendation:
The 2024 Stargazer KURA is a beautifully perfumed, food-friendly red that combines the richness of Shiraz with the elegance of Pinot Noir. Pair it with roast duck, grilled lamb, mushroom risotto, chargrilled pork, game birds or mature alpine cheeses. Enjoy now with a short decant, or cellar confidently through 2034.
