The 2022 Domaine Naturaliste Artus Chardonnay is a complex, textural 100% Chardonnay from Margaret River, Western Australia, crafted by respected winemaker Bruce Dukes. Established in 2012, Domaine Naturaliste draws on Dukes’ extensive experience working with the region’s vineyards, with Artus expressing the richer, more savoury side of his Chardonnay range. Made entirely from the Gin Gin clone, it is conceived as an interpretation of Chardonnay that combines Margaret River fruit intensity with the layered texture associated with fine white Burgundy. The 2022 received 97 Points from Ray Jordan, 96 Points from Angus Hughson and 95 Points from Huon Hooke, alongside a Gold Medal at the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards.
The 2022 offers nectarine, mango, grapefruit and lemon confit, layered with toasted nuts, nougat, savoury butterscotch and smoky oak. Its creamy palate carries considerable flavour, while focused acidity provides freshness and definition through the long finish. Ray Jordan highlighted its crème brûlée and butterscotch character balanced by keen acidity, while Angus Hughson praised its sleek shape and chalky complexity. Huon Hooke’s assessment emphasised refinement, restraint and depth, with refreshing acidity extending the flavours. This is a Chardonnay with substantial texture and personality, supported by the tension needed to keep its richness balanced.
