The 2023 Ministry of Clouds McLaren Vale Grenache is an expressive old-vine Grenache from Blewitt Springs and Clarendon in South Australia, capturing the fragrance and fine structure of contemporary McLaren Vale winemaking. The project of Bernice Ong and Julian Forwood, Ministry of Clouds places balance, texture and food compatibility at the centre of its wines. This vintage draws 58% from three Blewitt Springs growers and 42% from the oldest vines in Clarendon’s Smart Vineyard, bringing together complementary expressions of the region. The producer describes the source vineyards as more than 80 years old, providing fruit intensity while preserving an elegant, finely proportioned style.
The 2023 reveals cranberry, wild cherry, raspberry and pomegranate, layered with rose, violet, dried herbs and warm spice. Bright acidity and finely grained tannins give definition to the succulent fruit, while earthy and subtly ferrous notes add savoury depth. Marcus Ellis awarded 95 Points for Halliday Wine Companion, highlighting its poise and the balance between fruit sweetness and tannin. Erin Larkin also awarded 95 Points for The Wine Advocate, praising its textural complexity and persistence. Made with approximately 19% whole bunches, the wine was matured in a combination of seasoned French oak and concrete, allowing its fruit and vineyard character to remain clearly expressed.
