The 2016 Jim Barry Lodge Hill Riesling Cellar Release is a beautifully matured Clare Valley Riesling that demonstrates why the region is considered one of Australia’s benchmark homes for the variety. After extended bottle ageing, this cellar release has evolved beyond its youthful citrus intensity, developing additional complexity while retaining the vibrant acidity and mineral structure that define Lodge Hill Riesling.
The nose is expressive and layered, revealing aromas of lime marmalade, preserved lemon and citrus blossom alongside hints of ginger, wet stone and developing toast-like complexity. On the palate, it remains remarkably fresh, with bright acidity supporting flavours of lime, green apple and citrus peel. The texture has become more rounded with age, while the finish is long, mineral-driven and finely balanced.
Ben’s Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is a fantastic opportunity to experience Clare Valley Riesling with some bottle maturity already in place. The additional ageing has brought greater depth and complexity while preserving the freshness that makes the variety so appealing. Pair with fresh oysters, grilled prawns, pan-fried fish, roast pork or goat’s cheese. Drinking beautifully now, with the structure to continue evolving gracefully over the next 5–10 years.
