The 2023 Idda Etna Rosso DOP is a refined collaboration between the legendary Gaja family and Etna pioneer Alberto Graci, showcasing the elegance of Nerello Mascalese with a small proportion of Nerello Cappuccio. Sourced from high-altitude vineyards 700–800 metres above sea level on the south-western slopes of Mount Etna, the wine undergoes a three-week fermentation before ageing in large oak casks and concrete tanks, preserving the purity of its volcanic terroir. The nose is beautifully perfumed, revealing wild cherry, raspberry and pomegranate layered with dried herbs, rose petals, sweet spice and smoky volcanic minerality.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable mineral tension. Bright red berry fruit is complemented by savoury herbs, citrus peel and flinty volcanic notes, leading to a long, elegant finish with exceptional freshness and precision. Graceful and beautifully balanced, this is a benchmark Etna Rosso that captures the finesse and energy of one of Sicily's most exciting wine regions.
Ben’s Recommendation:
The 2023 Idda Etna Rosso DOP is a superb partner for roast lamb, duck breast, mushroom risotto, grilled pork, pasta with ragù or aged Pecorino. Enjoy now with a short decant, or cellar confidently through 2038 as its complexity, savoury character and volcanic minerality continue to evolve.
