IDDA
IDDA is one of Sicily's most prestigious wine projects, created through the partnership between the legendary Gaja family and renowned Etna producer Alberto Graci. Established in 2017, IDDA is dedicated to expressing the extraordinary volcanic terroir of Mount Etna through elegant, site-driven wines crafted from indigenous Sicilian grape varieties. The name "IDDA" means "she" in the Sicilian dialect—a term affectionately used by locals to refer to Mount Etna, recognising the volcano as both powerful and life-giving.
The estate is located on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, with vineyards planted between approximately 600 and 800 metres above sea level. Ancient lava flows, volcanic ash, and basalt-rich soils provide exceptional drainage and mineral complexity, while warm Mediterranean sunshine is balanced by cool mountain temperatures and significant diurnal variation. These conditions create wines of remarkable freshness, aromatic precision, and longevity.
IDDA focuses on Etna's indigenous grape varieties, producing Etna Rosso primarily from Nerello Mascalese and Etna Bianco from Carricante. The Etna Rosso displays aromas of wild cherry, raspberry, blood orange, rose petals, Mediterranean herbs, volcanic ash, and sweet spice. On the palate, it combines refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and striking mineral tension, delivering an elegant style often compared to fine Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo. The Carricante-based white wine offers layers of lemon, grapefruit, white peach, jasmine, saline minerality, and remarkable freshness, with outstanding ageing potential.
The philosophy behind IDDA combines the Gaja family's pursuit of precision with Alberto Graci's intimate knowledge of Mount Etna's unique terroir. Sustainable vineyard practices, meticulous parcel selection, hand harvesting, indigenous yeast fermentations, and minimal intervention allow each wine to faithfully express the individuality of its volcanic origin.
Despite its relatively recent establishment, IDDA has already become one of Etna's most sought-after labels, receiving international acclaim for producing wines that combine elegance, purity, and authentic volcanic character. The project has further cemented Mount Etna's reputation as one of the world's most exciting fine wine regions.
