The 2024 Ata Rangi Pōtiki Chardonnay is an outstanding cool-climate Chardonnay from Martinborough, crafted by one of New Zealand’s most celebrated wineries. Named “Pōtiki,” meaning “last born” in Māori, the wine is sourced from a blend of newer and established vineyard blocks on the Martinborough Terrace. Wild fermentation in 300-litre French oak puncheons followed by 11 months on lees creates a Chardonnay that combines purity, texture and remarkable complexity. The 2024 growing season is regarded by Ata Rangi as an exceptional vintage, delivering outstanding fruit concentration and crystalline acidity.
The nose is beautifully expressive, offering aromas of yellow nectarine, bergamot and baked apple alongside savoury notes of miso, sesame seed cake and subtle flinty minerality. On the palate, flavours of crushed shell, baked apple and hints of lanolin are supported by impressive depth and a vibrant line of acidity that brings freshness and precision to a long, saline finish.
Critics have been highly impressed by the 2024 release. James Suckling awarded 97 points, praising its flinty mineral character, linear structure and freshness, while Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion) awarded 94 points, highlighting its chalky texture, mineral drive and modern, restrained style.
