The 2023 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is a benchmark Northern Rhône Syrah assembled from the family’s finest parcels across the legendary Hermitage hill. The generous yet balanced 2023 vintage delivers remarkably pure aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry and blackberry, layered with violet, incense, pepper, tapenade, subtle leather and crushed graphite.
On the palate, it is broad, concentrated and velvety, with ripe dark fruit framed by exceptionally fine tannins and fresh mineral tension. Ageing for 15–18 months in barrels and large oak foudres, with very little new wood, preserves the wine’s fruit purity and complex expression of Hermitage’s varied soils. The finish is exceptionally long, floral and savoury, with lingering spice, black olive and stony minerality.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a cellar-worthy reference point for Hermitage and one of the Northern Rhône’s most collectible wines. Although the supple 2023 vintage can be approached young after two to three hours of decanting, it will show its greatest complexity with patience. Ideally drink from 2032 through 2055. Perfect with herb-crusted lamb, dry-aged beef, venison, braised game, truffle dishes or mature hard cheese.
