2023 Artuke Pies Negros Rioja is a modern expression of Rioja from the village of Abalos in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region. Produced by the brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel of Bodegas Artuke, this wine reflects the new generation of Rioja winemaking that emphasizes freshness, terroir expression, and elegant structure over heavy oak influence.
Made primarily from Tempranillo with around 10–15% Graciano, the grapes come from old vineyards planted at higher elevations around the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria. The wine is fermented using traditional methods—including foot-treading of the grapes—before aging for around 12 months in used French oak barrels and concrete tanks to preserve purity and balance.
Aromatically, the wine shows blackberry, black cherry and plum layered with liquorice, pepper and subtle floral notes. On the palate it is medium-bodied, vibrant and juicy, with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and hints of spice, balsamic and cocoa on the finish.
This style of Rioja highlights drinkability and finesse while still delivering depth and complexity, making it an excellent example of contemporary Rioja Alavesa. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, roast chicken, tapas, charcuterie and Spanish dishes.
