RIOJA
Rioja is Spain’s most famous wine region and one of the country’s most historic appellations, located in northern Spain along the Ebro River. Known for producing elegant, age-worthy red wines, Rioja has built a global reputation for wines that combine vibrant fruit, refined oak and remarkable balance.
The region is divided into three main subregions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja). Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa are particularly renowned for producing structured and complex wines due to their higher altitude, cooler climate and limestone-rich soils.
The dominant grape variety is Tempranillo, often blended with traditional varieties such as Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. Rioja wines are also known for their traditional ageing classifications—Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva—which indicate minimum ageing requirements in oak and bottle.
Typical Rioja wines show aromas of red cherry, plum and dried herbs, often complemented by notes of vanilla, cedar and spice from oak ageing. The wines are celebrated for their elegance, structure and ability to age gracefully.
Today Rioja remains one of the world’s most recognisable wine regions, producing wines that balance tradition, terroir and modern winemaking precision.
