The 2023 Albert Mann Pinot Noir Grand H Grand Cru is sourced from the famed Hengst Grand Cru vineyard in Wintzenheim, one of the very few Alsace Grand Cru sites permitted to produce Pinot Noir. Farmed biodynamically by the Barthelmé family, Grand H represents the pinnacle of Albert Mann’s Pinot Noir program, produced from exceptional parcels within this warm, limestone-rich hillside. The wine has quickly established itself as one of the leading expressions of Alsatian Pinot Noir, combining Grand Cru power with remarkable finesse.
The nose reveals black cherry, raspberry and cassis layered with violet, liquorice and subtle smoky mineral notes. The palate is concentrated yet beautifully poised, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and impressive mineral tension. Rich and powerful without excess weight, it finishes long, savoury and energetic. James Suckling praised its fine red berry fruit and delicate spice, while early reviews have highlighted its elegance, balance and outstanding ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
One of the most exciting Pinot Noirs being made in Alsace today and a serious alternative to premium Burgundy. Perfumed, structured and beautifully refined, it pairs superbly with duck, pigeon, roast quail, venison and mushroom-based dishes. While approachable with a decant, this is a wine built for the cellar and should reward patience through 2040 and beyond.
