The 2022 Fratelli Alessandria Barbera d'Alba Priora is sourced from a small south-facing vineyard in Verduno, planted on limestone and clay soils that give the wine greater depth and structure than the estate’s regular Barbera. One of the historic producers of Barolo, Fratelli Alessandria applies the same meticulous vineyard work and traditional winemaking approach here, resulting in a Barbera that balances richness with remarkable elegance.
The nose reveals black cherry, plum and blackberry alongside notes of violet, baking spice and subtle earthiness. The palate is concentrated and beautifully polished, with vibrant acidity, silky tannins and layers of dark fruit carried by a long, savoury finish. Richer and more structured than a typical Barbera d'Alba, it retains the freshness and energy that make the variety so compelling.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A serious Barbera that offers superb value for lovers of Nebbiolo and traditional Piedmont reds. The combination of ripe fruit, freshness and savoury complexity makes it an excellent match for pasta ragù, grilled meats, braised beef, roast pork and aged cheeses. Drinking beautifully now, but it has the balance and structure to evolve through 2032–2035.
