2025 Swinging Bridge #009 Gamay - Warmer conditions at the start of the 2025 season delivered an early budburst in the first weeks of September. High rainfall at the end of November prompted leaf and bunch thinning to mitigate disease pressure, followed by no rain for 5 weeks from February 14th, delivering above average temperatures and allowing for excellent ripening conditions post-veraison. Harvest began on March 3rd, with some concerns arising from the 100mm of rain projected from the ex-cyclone Alfred system. Thankfully it didn’t occur, and our Gamay was harvested by hand on the 19th of March.
The aim of the game here is bright fresh fruit and it delivers in truckloads. Bing cherries, glistening redcurrants and cranberries. Some kirsch and black tea leaf. A Gala apple skin tautness leads to a chalky stone finish. This can be chilled or popped into Burgundy glasses; ideal with a pork terrine and cherry jam. - 91 points, Shanteh Wale
