The 2008 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Grands Crus Blanc de Blancs is an exceptional 100% Chardonnay from five Grand Cru villages in Champagne’s Côte des Blancs: Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger. First produced in 1952, Comtes de Champagne is Taittinger’s prestige Blanc de Blancs, made only in selected vintages. The 2008 spent more than a decade maturing in the house’s chalk cellars beneath Saint-Nicaise in Reims before its release in 2020. Its combination of concentrated fruit, chalky definition and remarkable freshness has earned it a place among the most highly acclaimed modern releases of this celebrated cuvée.
The 2008 offers lemon oil, green apple, pear and peach, layered with warm brioche, blanched almond and chalky mineral notes. Its substantial concentration is supported by incisive acidity and a fine mousse, giving the wine both power and elegance. William Kelley awarded it 98 Points, praising its intensity, balance and extraordinary ageing potential. Antonio Galloni awarded 98+ Points, highlighting its expression of the Côte des Blancs, while James Suckling awarded 100 Points, emphasising its completeness and harmony. The appeal lies in the way its generous flavour unfolds through a precise, persistent finish, with freshness providing the structure for continued development.
