The 2022 Saint-Damien “Les Souteyrades” is a benchmark single-vineyard Gigondas, built on an 80% Grenache / 20% Mourvèdre blend from old vines planted as far back as 1948. Sourced from clay-rich terraces in the southern Rhône, it represents a more powerful and structured expression of Gigondas while maintaining the estate’s signature balance and finesse.
The nose is highly expressive and layered, showing ripe strawberry, black raspberry and dark cherry, alongside violet, pepper, garrigue herbs and exotic spice. There is a distinct Rhône savoury character, with notes of liquorice, cedar and dried herbs adding depth and complexity.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a rich yet silky texture and fine, structured tannins. Dark fruit, spice and earthy nuances are supported by freshness and balance, leading to a long, powerful yet polished finish. The 2022 vintage stands out for combining concentration with purity — delivering intensity without heaviness, and excellent ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a serious “step-up Rhône wine” that we position just below top Châteauneuf-du-Pape — essentially a more structured, terroir-driven alternative at outstanding value. Compared to Plan de Dieu, this is deeper, more powerful and more cellar-worthy. It’s ideal for customers who enjoy Rhône blends, Barossa Shiraz or structured GSM but want something more complex and savoury. Drink with decanting now or cellar for 10–15+ years. Perfect with lamb, game, slow-cooked dishes or classic French cuisine.
