Mother Block is a contemporary Australian wine range created by the Chalmers family, one of Australia's leading pioneers of alternative and Italian grape varieties. Produced from the family's vineyard at Merbein in Victoria's Murray Darling region, Mother Block celebrates climate-appropriate varieties through vibrant, accessible field blends with a distinctive Australian identity.

The name comes directly from the vineyard's role within the Chalmers family's renowned vine nursery. Over several decades, Chalmers has imported numerous grape varieties into Australia, with vines established at Merbein serving as mother blocks from which propagation material is supplied to growers around the country. More than 1.5 million vines have been supplied to Australian growers, making the vineyard an important part of the evolution of alternative varieties in Australian wine.

The Merbein vineyard sits on distinctive red Murray sand and limestone soils under the warm, dry conditions of the Murray Darling. Rather than attempting to force traditional cool-climate varieties into this environment, Mother Block focuses on grapes naturally suited to warmer and drier conditions—particularly varieties with origins in Italy and the Mediterranean.

Mother Block's range centres on co-fermented field blends, with the precise composition able to evolve between vintages. The collection includes White, Skin Contact, Rosé and Red, providing different expressions of the diverse varieties planted in the mother vineyard.

Mother Block White is a bright, dry field blend built around Mediterranean white varieties. Recent compositions have featured grapes including Vermentino, Verdicchio, Fiano, Grechetto, Arneis and Garganega, producing fresh citrus and orchard-fruit characters alongside herbs and a chalky mineral quality.

The Skin Contact bottling explores another side of the vineyard, fermenting white varieties with their skins to create greater texture and savoury complexity. Recent releases have drawn on varieties such as Vermentino, Fiano, Falanghina, Pecorino, Moscato Giallo and Ansonica, resulting in an aromatic, energetic style with citrus, tropical fruit, nuts, herbs and gentle grip.

Mother Block Red brings together warm-climate red varieties to produce a juicy, vibrant and highly approachable expression. Recent blends have centred on Nero d'Avola and Sagrantino, supported by varieties such as Sangiovese and Teroldego. Expect summer berries, plum and cherry alongside earthy, spicy and savoury characters with supple texture and a fresh finish.

Sustainability is fundamental to the Mother Block philosophy. The Merbein vineyard and winery are certified with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, with the Chalmers family focusing on soil health, efficient water use, renewable energy and biodiversity. The wines are also bottled in lightweight glass with labels produced from recycled material.
