The 2020 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Gramolere comes from a prized vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, the estate’s only cru located outside Verduno. Planted on sandy, high-altitude soils at around 400 metres, Gramolere consistently produces a more structured and mineral expression of Barolo than the estate’s Verduno vineyards. Crafted by one of Piedmont’s most respected traditional producers, the wine is aged in large oak casks, allowing the purity of Nebbiolo and the character of the site to shine.
The nose reveals red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and dried herbs, alongside notes of mint, balsam and spice. The palate is elegant yet tightly wound, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and impressive mineral tension. James Suckling awarded the wine 94 points, Wine Enthusiast 95 points and Kerin O’Keefe 94 points, praising its refinement, balance and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A beautifully traditional Barolo that showcases the finesse and energy of the Gramolere vineyard. Perfumed, structured and highly age-worthy, it pairs superbly with braised beef, osso buco, truffle pasta, wild mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses. While approachable with extended decanting, it will reward patience and should evolve gracefully through 2040 and beyond.
