DOMAINE FOURRIER

Domaine Fourrier is one of the most admired estates in Gevrey-Chambertin and the wider Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. Its origins date back to the early 20th century, when Fernand Pernot first established the domaine, but it truly rose to prominence under Jean-Claude Fourrier, who took over in 1994 at the age of 23 after training with Henri Jayer and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon. Jean-Claude’s arrival marked a transformation, bringing precision, clarity, and a philosophy rooted in both tradition and innovation.

The domaine farms around 10 hectares of vineyards, with an enviable collection of old vines—many planted before World War II. Holdings span prestigious sites in Gevrey-Chambertin, including Premier Crus like Clos Saint-Jacques, Combe aux Moines, Goulots, Champeaux, and Cherbaudes, as well as small parcels in Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Vougeot. The jewel in the crown is a tiny plot in the Grand Cru Griotte-Chambertin, producing one of Burgundy’s most coveted wines.

In winemaking, Jean-Claude Fourrier applies techniques learned from Henri Jayer, notably complete destemming of grapes, no racking during élevage, and minimal use of new oak (typically around 20%). Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation, sulfur is applied sparingly, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. This gentle, transparent approach allows the character of the terroir and the voice of old vines to shine through.

Stylistically, Fourrier wines are renowned for their purity, aromatic lift, and silky texture, combining richness with energy. They are approachable in their youth, showing bright fruit and perfume, but also have the structure and depth to age gracefully. Signature cuvées such as Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne and Clos Saint-Jacques have become benchmarks for the appellation, and the rare Griotte-Chambertin is among the most sought-after wines in all of Burgundy.

Today, Domaine Fourrier stands as a modern Burgundy icon: a small estate with an outsized reputation, producing wines that perfectly balance tradition, precision, and terroir expression.
