DOMAINE DU PRE SEMELE
Domaine du Pré Semelé is a family-run wine estate in Sancerre, located in the hamlet of Maimbray at Sury-en-Vaux, approximately five kilometres north of Sancerre in France's Loire Valley. Today the domaine is led by brothers Julien and Clément Raimbault, representing the fourth generation of their family and farming around 22 hectares of Sancerre vineyards.
The Raimbault family's history in Maimbray stretches across generations. Julien and Clément took over from their father and uncle and have progressively evolved the estate's approach to viticulture and winemaking. Their philosophy draws inspiration from organic, biodynamic and natural viticulture, applying techniques according to what they believe best serves each vineyard and wine.
Since 2023, the domaine's 22 hectares have been cultivated organically. Vineyard work focuses on soil health and maintaining older vines, with the brothers describing their approach as artisanal and free from synthetic chemical products. They also use techniques such as vine-trunk curettage to preserve old plants affected by wood diseases.
The vineyards are characterised primarily by limestone and clay-limestone soils, two fundamental components of Sancerre terroir. For Sauvignon Blanc, around 70% of the vineyards are on terres blanches, contributing body, roundness and mineral character, while approximately 30% grow on the stonier limestone soils known as caillottes, which bring fruit and finesse.
Sauvignon Blanc is central to Domaine du Pré Semelé. The estate's Sancerre Blanc wines combine citrus and fruit with freshness, minerality and precise acidity. Alongside its signature Mainbré Blanc, the domaine produces individual cuvées including Les Chasseignes, Le Cotelin and La Montée de Saint Romble, allowing different Sancerre terroirs to express their individual personalities.
La Montée de Saint Romble is particularly distinctive, coming from the northern slope of Maimbray on Kimmeridgian marl rich in fossilised marine material. The estate considers this cooler terroir particularly valuable in warmer vintages because of its ability to maintain balance and freshness.
The domaine also produces Sancerre Rouge from Pinot Noir. Its Pinot Noir vineyards include iron-rich clay-limestone soils that contribute tannic structure and freshness, together with more clay-dominant marl that provides roundness and fruit. The red collection includes Mainbré Rouge and the more structured Camille, named in tribute to the brothers' great-uncle.
Winemaking follows the same low-intervention philosophy as the vineyards. Fermentations take place without added commercial yeast or enzymes, while sulphur is used sparingly. The domaine increasingly relies on extended maturation of 18 to 24 months to achieve natural stability and reduce the need for fining, filtration and other corrective processes.
A diverse collection of ageing vessels allows Julien and Clément to adapt élevage to each wine and vintage. These include wooden vats, foudres, demi-muids, barrels, concrete eggs, amphorae and glass Wineglobes, with vessels selected to enhance rather than obscure the character of individual cuvées.
