Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley, France, internationally recognized for producing elegant and expressive wines primarily from the Syrah grape. Surrounding the famous hill of Hermitage, the region combines diverse terroirs with classic Rhône Valley character, offering wines with freshness, spice, and strong regional identity.
The appellation benefits from a continental climate with warm summers, cooling northern influences, and varied granite, clay, and alluvial soils. These conditions allow Syrah to ripen fully while retaining vibrant acidity, aromatic complexity, and structure.
Crozes-Hermitage red wines are typically medium to full-bodied, displaying blackberry, plum, violet, black pepper, olive, smoked meat, and earthy mineral notes supported by fine tannins and freshness. While approachable in youth, many examples also develop additional complexity with age. The region also produces smaller quantities of white wine from Marsanne and Roussanne, known for stone fruit, floral notes, texture, and richness.
