CHATEAU MONTROSE
Château Montrose is one of the great estates of Saint-Estèphe and a benchmark for powerful, long-lived Left Bank Bordeaux. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Montrose is renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines that combine extraordinary structure, concentration and freshness with the ability to evolve for many decades.
The estate was established during the 19th century on land overlooking the Gironde estuary. Its name, meaning "pink mountain", is traditionally associated with the pink flowering heather that once covered the hillside. Château Montrose quickly developed an outstanding reputation, culminating in its Second Growth ranking in 1855. Today, the estate is owned by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who have undertaken extensive investment in its vineyards, winery and environmental initiatives.
Montrose occupies an exceptional position in Saint-Estèphe, with a large, contiguous vineyard overlooking the Gironde. Deep gravel soils over clay-rich subsoils provide excellent drainage while maintaining access to water during dry conditions. The proximity of the estuary moderates temperature extremes and reduces frost risk, creating a particularly favourable mesoclimate for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the vineyard, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon provides cassis, graphite, tannic structure and longevity, while Merlot adds richness and texture. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contribute additional perfume, colour and spice.
Château Montrose typically reveals intense aromas and flavours of blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry and plum, accompanied by graphite, cedar, tobacco, violet, liquorice and savoury spice. The palate is renowned for its concentration and formidable structure, yet the finest vintages possess remarkable precision and freshness. With extended cellaring, the wine develops complex notes of cigar box, leather, earth and forest floor.
Viticulture and winemaking at Montrose are conducted with meticulous attention to detail. The estate's unusually contiguous vineyard allows precise management of individual parcels, while grapes are carefully harvested, selected and vinified according to their origin. Maturation in French oak barrels builds complexity and structure while preserving the character of the terroir.
Sustainability has become an increasingly important part of Château Montrose's philosophy. Significant investment has been made in reducing energy consumption, improving water management and increasing biodiversity across the estate, combining modern environmental practices with the traditional standards expected of a great classified Bordeaux château.
The estate also produces La Dame de Montrose, offering a more approachable expression of the Montrose terroir. The grand vin remains one of the Médoc's great cellar wines, with outstanding vintages capable of developing magnificently over several decades.
