CHATEAU LAFAURIE PEYRAGUEY
Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a historic Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) estate in Sauternes, recognised in the prestigious 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac. Situated in the commune of Bommes, the château produces luxurious botrytised sweet wines renowned for their concentration, aromatic complexity, freshness and exceptional ability to age.
The estate has centuries of viticultural history and occupies a privileged position in the heart of Sauternes, close to some of the appellation's most celebrated vineyards. In 2014, Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey was acquired by Swiss entrepreneur Silvio Denz, beginning a new era of investment in both the vineyards and winery while preserving the property's historic identity.
The vineyards benefit from the distinctive terroir and microclimate that make Sauternes unique. Gravel, clay and limestone-influenced soils provide excellent growing conditions, while the nearby Ciron and Garonne rivers play an essential role during autumn. Cool morning mists followed by warm, dry afternoons encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, which naturally concentrates the grapes' sugars, acidity and flavours.
Sémillon forms the foundation of Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey's sweet wines, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and smaller amounts of other traditional white Bordeaux varieties. Sémillon contributes richness, texture and longevity, while Sauvignon Blanc brings citrus freshness and aromatic lift.
The wines typically reveal layers of apricot, peach, pineapple and candied citrus, accompanied by honey, acacia, saffron, vanilla and exotic spice. Despite their richness and residual sweetness, the finest vintages retain vibrant acidity and mineral freshness, creating the balance and precision essential to great Sauternes.
Harvesting is exceptionally labour intensive. Vineyard workers make several selective passes, known as tries, through the vines, picking individual bunches or berries only when noble rot has reached the desired stage. This painstaking process results in very low yields but provides the concentration and complexity required for the château's grand vin.
Careful fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels develop additional texture and complexity. With extended bottle ageing, Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey can evolve beautifully, developing aromas of dried apricot, marmalade, beeswax, caramel, toasted nuts and spice while maintaining remarkable freshness.
The estate has also become known for the close relationship between wine, gastronomy and luxury hospitality, with the historic château transformed into the Lalique Hotel & Restaurant Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey. This connection reflects Silvio Denz's involvement with Lalique and has given the property a distinctive contemporary identity while maintaining its position as an important Sauternes producer.
For collectors and lovers of sweet Bordeaux, Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey offers a compelling combination of First Growth heritage, exceptional terroir and impressive longevity. Its wines can accompany foie gras, blue cheese and fruit desserts, while mature bottles are complex enough to be enjoyed entirely on their own.
