CHATEAU LA TOUR BLANCHE
Château La Tour Blanche is one of the distinguished estates of Sauternes, renowned for producing luxurious, botrytised sweet wines with exceptional richness, freshness and ageing potential. Classified as a Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) in the historic 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac, the château occupies an important place among Bordeaux's great sweet-wine producers.
The estate is located in the commune of Bommes, in the heart of the Sauternes appellation. Its vineyards benefit from the distinctive microclimate created by the nearby Ciron and Garonne rivers. Cool autumn mornings encourage the formation of mist, followed by warmer, drier afternoons that promote the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This natural process concentrates sugars, acidity and flavour within the grapes.
The vineyards are planted principally to Sémillon, supported by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Sémillon provides richness, texture and extraordinary ageing capacity, while Sauvignon Blanc contributes citrus freshness and aromatic lift. Muscadelle adds delicate floral and exotic notes to the final blend.
Château La Tour Blanche typically displays layers of apricot, peach, pineapple and candied citrus, accompanied by honey, acacia, saffron, vanilla and delicate spice. Although intensely concentrated and sweet, the wine's vibrant acidity provides freshness and balance. With bottle age, it can develop complex aromas of marmalade, dried fruit, beeswax, caramel and toasted nuts.
Producing Château La Tour Blanche requires an exceptionally demanding harvest. Grapes affected by noble rot are selected by hand through multiple passes, known as tries, with pickers harvesting only berries that have reached the desired level of concentration. The resulting yields are extremely low, but this painstaking process is essential to achieving the complexity and intensity expected of top Sauternes.
The estate has a particularly unusual history. In the early 20th century, owner Daniel Iffla, known as Osiris, bequeathed Château La Tour Blanche to the French state on the condition that a school of viticulture and oenology be established there. The property subsequently became home to an important wine school, combining the production of classified Sauternes with education and research in viticulture and winemaking.
As a Premier Cru Classé, Château La Tour Blanche offers a classic expression of fine Sauternes: concentrated yet balanced, richly aromatic and capable of developing for decades. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheese and fruit desserts, while its complexity also makes it an exceptional wine to enjoy independently.
