The 2023 ChaLou Dreaded Friend Grenache is a vibrant, small-batch Grenache sourced from organically farmed vines in Canowindra, New South Wales. Produced by Steve and Nadja from ChaLou Wines, the fruit comes from just 2,000 organically managed vines and is crafted with a minimal-intervention approach. The wine includes around 30% whole bunch fermentation with native yeasts, gentle handling and minimal sulphur additions, resulting in a Grenache that emphasises perfume, energy and site expression.
The nose is fragrant and lifted, revealing red cherry, raspberry and strawberry alongside pomegranate, rose petal and subtle spice. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully poised, combining juicy red berry fruit with savoury spice, fine tannins and bright natural acidity. Notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and dried herbs add complexity, while the finish remains fresh, silky and elegantly structured. Qwine Reviews awarded the wine 94 points, while The Real Review scored it 92 points, highlighting its elegance, tension and vibrant red-fruited character.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A beautifully modern Australian Grenache that balances purity, freshness and drinkability. Fragrant, energetic and highly food-friendly, it pairs wonderfully with lamb cutlets, chargrilled vegetables, duck, charcuterie and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Serve slightly chilled for maximum enjoyment and drink over the next 4–6 years while its vibrant fruit and spice remain at their peak.
