Located on the granite slopes of Beechworth in north-eastern Victoria, the estate sits at approximately 500 metres above sea level, where warm days and cool nights provide ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. The ancient decomposed granite soils naturally limit vine vigour, producing low yields of intensely flavoured fruit with exceptional freshness, mineral complexity, and balance. These unique growing conditions allow Castagna to produce wines of precision, finesse, and remarkable ageing potential.
Castagna is best known for its flagship Genesis Syrah, one of Australia's benchmark cool-climate Syrahs, alongside Un Segreto Sangiovese, Allegro Chardonnay, La Chiave, and Madre. The Syrah displays aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet, cracked pepper, olive tapenade, smoked herbs, and graphite with finely structured tannins and vibrant acidity. The Sangiovese offers sour cherry, cranberry, dried herbs, and savoury spice, while the Chardonnay delivers citrus, white peach, flint, and subtle oak with outstanding tension and length.
From its inception, Castagna has embraced biodynamic farming and low-intervention winemaking. The vineyards are certified biodynamic, with no synthetic herbicides or pesticides used. Fruit is hand harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and handled gently in the winery with minimal intervention. Oak is used judiciously to complement rather than dominate the fruit, allowing each wine to reflect its vineyard origin and vintage with clarity and authenticity.
