San Polo

San Polo is one of the leading estates in Montalcino, producing elegant and terroir-driven Brunello di Montalcino that reflects the exceptional quality of Tuscany's most prestigious Sangiovese appellation. Acquired by the renowned Allegrini family in 2007, the estate combines generations of Italian winemaking expertise with a deep commitment to sustainability, precision viticulture, and minimal-intervention winemaking. Today, San Polo is recognised as one of the benchmark modern producers of Brunello, consistently delivering wines of purity, finesse, and outstanding ageing potential.

The estate comprises approximately 22 hectares of organically farmed vineyards on the south-eastern slopes of Montalcino. Sitting at elevations between 350 and 450 metres, the vineyards benefit from excellent sun exposure, significant day-to-night temperature variation, and a combination of clay, limestone, and galestro soils. These conditions allow Sangiovese Grosso to ripen slowly and evenly, producing wines with vibrant acidity, concentrated fruit, refined tannins, and exceptional aromatic complexity.

San Polo is best known for its Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Brunello Riserva, Rosso di Montalcino, and Rubio Toscana IGT. The Brunello displays classic aromas of black cherry, wild berries, dried herbs, violets, tobacco, leather, and earthy spice, supported by fine-grained tannins and remarkable structure. Rosso di Montalcino offers a more approachable expression of Sangiovese with bright red fruit and freshness, while the estate's IGT wines showcase the versatility and elegance of Tuscan winemaking.

Sustainability is central to San Polo's philosophy. The estate is certified organic and was among the first wineries in Tuscany to achieve CasaClima Wine certification for its environmentally sustainable winery. Grapes are hand harvested, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and matured in carefully selected large oak casks and French oak barrels depending on the wine. Every stage of production is designed to preserve vineyard character while allowing the wines to develop complexity, balance, and longevity.

San Polo has earned widespread acclaim from leading international critics including James Suckling, Wine Spectator, Decanter, and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, with many Brunello vintages receiving scores in the mid-to-high 90-point range.
