The 2021 Domaine de Montille Puligny-Montrachet is an unusually serious village-level white Burgundy from one of the Côte de Beaune’s most respected domaines. What makes this wine particularly interesting is that the majority comes from a 1.1-hectare parcel within Les Chalumeaux, situated in the middle of the Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru slope. The parcel was historically downgraded to village classification after being replanted in 1975 because the previous owner had introduced approximately 20cm of external soil. Domaine de Montille believes that decades of erosion and organic farming have allowed the roots to penetrate back into the original terroir, helping explain the wine’s unusual density and complexity for a village Puligny. Additional fruit comes from Les Levrons and Boudrières–Nosroyes.
