The 2020 Domaine de Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is a beautifully concentrated expression of one of Puligny-Montrachet’s most highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards. Domaine de Montille farms approximately half a hectare in a superb mid-slope position, with its parcel sandwiched directly between holdings belonging to Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Leroy. The clay and limestone soils here are slightly deeper and retain moisture particularly well, an important advantage in a warm, dry vintage such as 2020. The fruit was lightly crushed before pressing, then fermented and matured in French oak barrels with approximately 30% new oak.
The 2020 combines the natural richness of the vintage with impressive Puligny tension and minerality. Aromas of bright citrus, lemon peel and passionfruit are joined by subtle spice, gunflint and smoky reduction. The palate has excellent breadth and concentration, yet a pure line of acidity and pronounced salty minerality keeps the wine focused and energetic through a long, complex finish. Critical reception was outstanding, with 95 Points from Decanter, 95 Points from Tim Atkin, 92–94 Points from Jasper Morris MW and 92 Points from Burghound. Decanter gives the wine an exceptionally long drinking window of 2025–2050.
