CLARENCE HOUSE ESTATE

Clarence House Estate is a cool-climate Tasmanian winery situated in the foothills of the Meehan Ranges, between Hobart and the Coal Valley. The estate lies on Jurassic dolerite and basalt soils in the Coal River Valley, with a favourable north-eastern aspect that helps moderate climate influences.

The vineyard was planted in 1998 by David Kilpatrick on approximately 6 hectares initially, expanding over time to about 16 ha with more plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  The Pinot Blanc planting, in particular, was made after consultation with Andrew Hood, who saw parallels between the site and Oregon in terms of conditions.

Winemaking is handled by Justin Bubb and Anna Pooley of Pooley Wines. Their style tends toward gentle, low-input methods, with a respect for the site and an “Old World” sensibility emphasizing elegance, balance, and typicity.

Clarence House Estate produces several tiers of wine: the standard Estate range; a Reserve label for the best barrels (often with extended oak maturation); and a smaller Clarence Plains label which is available only in Tasmania.  Among the signature wines are their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both receiving praise for their aromatic clarity and structure. Their Pinot Blanc is also notable, being among the few in Tasmania.
