The 2005 Barranco Oscuro 1368 Cerro Las Monjas is a distinctive mature red from the high-altitude Alpujarras of Granada in southern Spain. A blend of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, it comes from vineyards reaching around 1,368 metres above sea level. It shows dark cherry, blackberry and plum alongside dried herbs, tobacco, liquorice, balsamic notes and earthy complexity.
On the palate, it is concentrated yet remarkably fresh, with mature dark fruit supported by fine, integrated tannins and pronounced savoury character. Extended barrel ageing adds layers of spice and evolved complexity, while the vineyard’s extreme altitude helps retain freshness and definition. With more than two decades of bottle age, the wine offers a long, mineral and savoury finish.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for drinkers interested in mature, naturally made Spanish reds with distinctive provenance and significant bottle development. Its combination of evolved fruit, savoury complexity and fine tannins makes it particularly suited to hearty dishes. Ideal with slow-cooked lamb, roast beef, game, mushroom dishes or aged Manchego.
