2020 Armand Heitz Volnay 1er Cru "Carelle Sous Chapelle" is a beautifully perfumed and elegant Pinot Noir from one of Volnay’s classic Premier Cru sites, known for producing wines with finesse rather than power. The nose is expressive and lifted, showing red cherry, strawberry and raspberry, layered with violet, spice and subtle earthy notes, with hints of herbal complexity and light leather adding depth . This is very much in line with Volnay’s identity - floral, refined and aromatic .
On the palate, it is silky, vibrant and finely structured, offering juicy red fruit, forest berry notes and a touch of liquorice, supported by fresh acidity and very fine tannins. The texture is elegant and flowing rather than dense, with a long, mineral-driven and harmonious finish . The 2020 vintage brings a bit more ripeness and mid-palate generosity, but still maintains the classic Volnay balance of grace and precision.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is exactly the kind of wine we position as a "pure Volnay Premier Cru expression" - elegant, perfumed and extremely drinkable. Compared to Pommard (more structured) or Nuits-Saint-Georges (more serious), this is more silky, floral and approachable, making it perfect for customers who appreciate finesse-driven Pinot Noir. A great recommendation for Burgundy lovers who enjoy Chambolle-Musigny style elegance, and ideal with duck, quail or mushroom dishes. Drink with light decanting now or cellar for 8–12+ years.
