ALTO ADIGE
Alto Adige, also known as Südtirol, is one of Italy's most prestigious wine regions, celebrated for producing elegant, cool-climate wines that combine Alpine freshness with Mediterranean ripeness. Situated in Italy's northernmost corner bordering Austria and Switzerland, Alto Adige enjoys a unique cultural heritage and exceptional growing conditions that have established it as one of Europe's finest white wine regions.
The region's vineyards are planted between 200 and over 1,000 metres above sea level, making Alto Adige one of the world's premier high-altitude wine regions. Warm sunny days are balanced by cool Alpine nights, creating significant diurnal temperature variation that preserves acidity while allowing grapes to develop intense aromas and remarkable flavour concentration. The region's diverse soils, including porphyry, limestone, dolomite, granite, and volcanic rock, contribute exceptional complexity and mineral character to the wines.
Alto Adige is internationally renowned for its outstanding white wines. Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Kerner all thrive in the region's cool climate. The wines are characterised by vibrant citrus, orchard fruit, floral aromas, crisp acidity, and precise mineral structure. Gewürztraminer, believed to originate from the village of Tramin, is particularly expressive, offering distinctive notes of lychee, rose petals, exotic spice, and tropical fruit.
The region also produces exceptional red wines from both indigenous and international varieties. Lagrein and Schiava (Vernatsch) are Alto Adige's signature native grapes, while Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon perform exceptionally well in selected vineyard sites. These wines are known for their elegance, freshness, refined tannins, and excellent ageing potential.
Sustainability is central to modern viticulture in Alto Adige. Many producers employ environmentally responsible farming practices, hand harvesting, and minimal intervention in the winery to preserve vineyard character and express the individuality of each site.
Leading producers such as Cantina Terlano, Elena Walch, Alois Lageder, Tiefenbrunner, Kellerei Tramin, Manincor, Girlan, and Cantina Valle Isarco have established Alto Adige as one of Italy's benchmark wine regions. Their wines consistently receive international acclaim for their precision, purity, and exceptional quality.
Today, Alto Adige stands among Europe's greatest cool-climate wine regions, producing sophisticated wines that combine Alpine elegance, vibrant freshness, and outstanding terroir expression.
