The 2024 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is one of the world's most coveted Kabinett Rieslings, produced from the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard in the Saar, Germany. Egon Müller works exclusively with Riesling from estate-owned vineyards, with Scharzhofberg representing the historic heart of the domaine and one of Germany's most celebrated Riesling terroirs. The steep, slate-dominated hillside produces wines renowned for extraordinary delicacy, smoky minerality and longevity. The 2024 vintage is particularly rare: severe spring frost devastated much of the estate, with some reports indicating more than 90% damage across key vineyards and historically tiny overall yields. The surviving fruit experienced an unusually long, cool growing season, producing a distinctly classical Saar expression built around acidity, mineral tension and finesse rather than richness.
The Kabinett fruit was harvested early in the picking period to preserve its exceptional freshness and was hand-picked, gently pressed and spontaneously fermented in traditional 1,000-litre Fuder barrels. The 2024 initially appears remarkably restrained, gradually revealing ripe lemon, yuzu, green apple and white peach alongside citrus blossom, lemon verbena, meadow herbs and an intense smoky-slate character. On the palate it is feather-light yet remarkably concentrated, with razor-sharp Saar acidity balanced by delicate residual sweetness and a firm, salty mineral core. What makes the vintage particularly compelling is its almost extreme precision—the fruit remains subtle while the slate, herbs, acidity and salinity dominate the structure. Marius Klein awarded the wine 94+ Points, describing it as a long-distance runner that deserves at least a decade in the cellar.
