The 2023 Domaine de Montille Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens-Bas is one of the domaine’s most important red Burgundies and comes from what is widely considered the finest section of Pommard’s celebrated Rugiens vineyard. Rugiens is divided into Rugiens-Hauts and Rugiens-Bas, with the lower section prized for its iron-rich red clay soils and exceptional combination of power, depth and minerality. Domaine de Montille is the largest landholder in Rugiens-Bas, owning two parcels totalling approximately 1.02 hectares. The domaine itself describes Rugiens-Bas as a Premier Cru possessing the texture and complexity of a Grand Cru - an appropriate description for a vineyard that has long been regarded as one of the strongest candidates for Grand Cru-level quality in Pommard.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an outstanding Premier Cru Burgundy for collectors and customers seeking a structured and cellar-worthy Pommard with depth, finesse and classic Côte de Beaune character. The 2023 vintage already shows impressive balance while retaining the capacity to evolve beautifully over the next 12–18 years. Best served slightly below room temperature with roast duck, lamb, mushroom dishes or aged hard cheeses.
