The 2023 Domaine de Montille Pommard Premier Cru Les Pézerolles is an unusually elegant and refined expression of Pommard, coming from one of the appellation’s most distinctive Premier Cru vineyards. Les Pézerolles lies at the northern end of Pommard close to the Beaune border, and Domaine de Montille describes it as the most delicate Premier Cru in Pommard, stylistically closer to the finesse and perfume of Volnay than to the muscular character traditionally associated with Pommard. The domaine’s principal vines lie in the heart of the climat, within the historic Clos de Pézerolles, an especially prized section of the vineyard. Domaine de Montille has farmed organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2005.

At Wine More Cellars, I think this is a particularly interesting Pommard for Burgundy drinkers who normally associate the appellation with power and firm tannins. Les Pézerolles is almost the opposite - it is one of Pommard’s most graceful, perfumed and Volnay-like Premier Crus, while still retaining enough depth and structure to age beautifully. Domaine de Montille’s position in the historic Clos de Pézerolles and the 95-point Decanter rating make the 2023 particularly compelling. This is still a young Burgundy and I would ideally cellar it until around 2029–2030 before opening, with strong potential through the late 2030s and beyond. Pair with roast duck, pigeon, veal, beef fillet, wild mushrooms, truffle or other refined game dishes.
