The 2022 Pyramid Valley Field of Fire Chardonnay comes from a tiny, biodynamically farmed vineyard in Waikari, North Canterbury. Its densely planted, southeast-facing vines grow in shallow glauconitic clay over well-drained limestone. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in seasoned French oak, the wine spent 12 months on lees in barrel followed by five months on light lees in stainless steel. It opens with lemon oil, lime, mandarin and white peach, accompanied by jasmine, fennel, struck flint, oyster shell, toasted hazelnut and subtle mushroom notes.
On the palate, it is taut and mineral-driven yet possesses impressive richness and concentration. Vibrant citrus acidity cuts through its supple texture, while fine phenolics provide shape and remarkable length. Flavours of lime, green apple, ginger and samphire lead into a chalky, saline and exceptionally pure finish.
