The 2022 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is the flagship wine of one of Burgundy’s most historic and revered estates. Domaine Ponsot is the largest landholder in Clos de la Roche, with fruit sourced from old vines planted across both the original Clos de la Roche climat and the famed Clos des Monts-Luisants section of the vineyard. Founded in 1872 and long regarded as a benchmark of Morey-Saint-Denis, the domaine crafts this iconic Grand Cru from some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Burgundy, producing a wine that perfectly captures the power, complexity and longevity of this legendary site.
The 2022 vintage displays an extraordinary combination of concentration and finesse. Aromas of black cherry, wild raspberry, violet, rose petal, baking spice, earth and subtle smoky notes unfold with remarkable precision. The palate is layered and powerful yet beautifully poised, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and immense depth of fruit. Notes of ripe berries, orange zest, spice, forest floor and mineral nuances carry through a remarkably long, structured finish. Neal Martin awarded the wine 95–97 points, describing it as a superb Clos de la Roche with exceptional energy and ageing potential, while Burghound rated it 96 points and Decanter also awarded 96 points, praising its monumental structure, elegance and longevity.
Ben’s Recommendation:
One of the great wines of the Côte de Nuits and a benchmark expression of Clos de la Roche. Combining immense power with remarkable refinement, this is a serious cellar-worthy Burgundy built for long-term ageing. Pair with roast duck, venison, beef Wellington, game birds, truffle dishes or aged cheeses. While approachable with extended decanting, it is best from 2030 onwards and has the structure to evolve gracefully for 30–50 years.
