The 2021 Pyramid Valley Manata Pinot Noir comes from the organically farmed Manata Vineyard in Central Otago’s Lowburn sub-region, acquired by Pyramid Valley in 2018 and now regarded as one of the region’s most exciting sites. Planted on north-facing slopes with loess soils over deep silts and limestone deposits, the vineyard produces Pinot Noir of remarkable depth, purity and finesse. The wine is wild fermented with 15% whole bunches and matured in French oak for 12 months before extended élevage in cuve.
The nose reveals dark cherry, plum, cassis and wild thyme, layered with spice, mocha and floral notes. Silky yet concentrated, the palate combines plush Central Otago fruit with fine tannins, bright acidity and a savoury mineral edge. James Suckling awarded 94 points, Halliday Wine Companion 95 points, and Bob Campbell MW 96 points, praising its purity, complexity and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb Central Otago Pinot Noir that balances richness with elegance. The combination of dark fruit, spice and silky texture makes it a fantastic match for duck breast, roast lamb, game birds and mushroom dishes. Drinking beautifully now with a decant, but will reward cellaring through 2035 and beyond.
