2020 Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Pastrolo
- Description
- Info
The 2020 Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Pastrolo is one of the most exciting new single-vineyard wines to emerge from the Chianti Classico region and a stunning expression of high-altitude Sangiovese. Produced by Fontodi, one of Tuscany’s benchmark estates, Pastrolo is sourced from a tiny 1.5-hectare vineyard in the prestigious Lamole UGA (Unità Geografica Aggiuntiva), sitting at over 600 metres above sea level on sandstone marl soils. Fermented in terracotta amphorae before ageing for 20 months in used 600-litre French oak tonneaux, this wine is crafted to express the purity of the site rather than oak influence. The outstanding 2020 vintage has produced a wine of remarkable elegance, perfume and mineral precision, earning 95 points from Falstaff.
The nose is intensely aromatic and beautifully layered, revealing aromas of wild cherry, red plum and black raspberry intertwined with lavender, sage and fresh Mediterranean herbs. As the wine opens, notes of menthol, iodine, sealing wax and crushed stone emerge, complemented by hints of dried rose petals, cedar and delicate balsamic spice. The aromatic profile is vibrant and sophisticated, balancing bright red fruit with savoury complexity and the unmistakable freshness of Lamole’s high-altitude terroir.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with silky yet finely structured tannins, vibrant natural acidity and remarkable precision. Layers of red cherry, cranberry and dark plum unfold seamlessly across the palate, supported by notes of dried herbs, tobacco, graphite and a beautifully defined mineral backbone. The amphora fermentation preserves exceptional fruit purity and transparency, while the gentle maturation in seasoned oak allows the vineyard’s character to remain the focal point. The finish is exceptionally long, poised and persistent, carrying lingering notes of sour cherry, floral perfume, savoury spice and crushed sandstone. The style is elegant rather than opulent, highlighting finesse, energy and terroir over sheer power. Falstaff noted its velvety texture, layered complexity and finely grained tannins while recommending additional cellaring to realise its full potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the most compelling new Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines and a must-try for lovers of world-class Sangiovese. Compared to Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo, Pastrolo is more floral, mineral-driven and finely detailed, reflecting the cooler, higher-altitude terroir of Lamole rather than the richer, darker-fruited style of Panzano. It offers a Burgundian sense of finesse while remaining unmistakably Tuscan, making it an outstanding choice for collectors looking to explore the new generation of UGA-designated Chianti Classico wines. Drink from 2027 onwards or cellar confidently through to 2045 and beyond. Perfect with bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb, wild boar ragù, venison, porcini mushroom dishes, aged Pecorino Toscano or the finest Tuscan cuisine.
