The 2020 Armand Heitz Mercurey is a vibrant Pinot Noir from Mercurey in Burgundy's Côte Chalonnaise, offering an excellent introduction to Armand Heitz's distinctive approach to red Burgundy. Mercurey is the most important red-wine appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise and is known for producing Pinot Noir with generous fruit, savoury depth and more structure than many regional Bourgogne wines. By the 2020 vintage, Armand Heitz's domaine had expanded to around 20 hectares across approximately 30 parcels between Mercurey and Beaune, with Heitz increasingly focusing on agroecology, permaculture and reducing intervention both in the vineyard and cellar. The 2020 season itself was exceptionally warm and dry, with the domaine reporting July and August rainfall around 62% below normal, producing concentrated Pinot Noir with excellent natural ripeness.
The 2020 Mercurey was vinified with 100% whole bunches, an important part of the wine's aromatic and structural personality. Jasper Morris MW rated it 87–90 Points, highlighting its deep raspberry fruit, excellent grip, generous fruit and fine tannins, while describing the wine as particularly successful. Allen Meadows at Burghound awarded 87 Points and designated it "Outstanding Top Value," noting ripe cassis and dark Pinot fruit alongside warm earth and a subtle tobacco character. On the palate, it is succulent and rounded, with ripe raspberry and darker berry fruit supported by fine but distinctly Burgundian tannins, earthy complexity and a long, energetic finish.
