The 2019 Pooley Butcher’s Hill Single Vineyard Chardonnay Magnum (1500ml) is a rare large-format Tasmanian Chardonnay from the Coal River Valley. Sourced from Pooley’s Butcher’s Hill vineyard in Richmond, the site features a steep north-facing slope with black cracking clay and sandy loam soils over sandstone and heavy clay. The 2019 was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and 100% barrel fermented before spending nine months in French oak, including 40% new oak. The wine opens with aromas of ripe pear, white peach and nectarine, layered with grapefruit, citrus, subtle florals, toasted nuts and flinty mineral notes.
On the palate, it is concentrated yet beautifully fresh, with generous stone fruit and melon complemented by crisp citrus acidity and fine mineral tension. Nutty, toasted and subtle yeasty characters add complexity, while the oak remains well integrated behind the fruit. The finish is long, textured and energetic, showing the combination of richness, precision and cool-climate freshness that has established Butcher’s Hill as one of Pooley’s important single-vineyard expressions.
