The 2018 Château La Négly L’Ancely is one of the estate’s flagship reds and a compelling showcase of old-vine Mourvèdre from the coastal La Clape appellation in Languedoc. Produced from a blend of approximately 70% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 10% Syrah, the wine comes from vineyards overlooking the Mediterranean, where sea breezes and limestone-rich soils contribute freshness and minerality. Under the guidance of the Paux-Rosset family and renowned consultant Claude Gros, Château La Négly has become one of southern France’s most acclaimed estates.
The nose is intensely expressive, revealing kirsch, blackberry and wild raspberry layered with mocha, cocoa, garrigue herbs and sweet spice. Full-bodied and richly textured, the palate combines concentrated dark fruit with silky tannins and remarkable freshness. Notes of black cherry, leather, pepper and subtle saline minerality emerge through a long, savoury finish. Critics have been highly enthusiastic about the vintage, with Wine Advocate awarding 96 points and praising its plush texture, Mourvèdre character and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A powerful yet beautifully balanced Mediterranean red that demonstrates why Château La Négly is considered one of Languedoc’s benchmark producers. Rich, complex and highly age-worthy, it pairs superbly with slow-roasted lamb, beef rib, venison, wild boar, cassoulet and hard aged cheeses. Decant for at least an hour if drinking now. While already impressive, this wine has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully through 2035–2040 and beyond.
