2017 Confuron-Cotetidot Echezeaux Grand Cru
- Description
- Info
The 2017 Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot Échezeaux Grand Cru is a magnificent Grand Cru Burgundy from one of Vosne-Romanée’s most traditional and respected family estates. Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot has been cultivating vines in Burgundy since the 17th century and is renowned for its uncompromising traditional approach, including organic farming, extended élevage of 18–24 months and minimal extraction. Their Échezeaux is widely regarded as the domaine’s most elegant Grand Cru, offering greater refinement and aromatic finesse than the estate’s more powerful Clos de Vougeot or Mazis-Chambertin bottlings. The excellent 2017 vintage has now entered a beautiful stage of evolution, revealing remarkable harmony while retaining decades of ageing potential.
The nose is intensely perfumed and beautifully layered, revealing aromas of black cherry, wild raspberry and ripe strawberry alongside rose petals, violet and sweet baking spices. As the wine opens, notes of sandalwood, forest floor and black tea emerge, complemented by hints of cedar, truffle and crushed limestone. The aromatic profile is remarkably elegant and expressive, balancing vibrant fruit with savoury complexity and the distinctive floral perfume that defines great Échezeaux.
On the palate, it is full-bodied with velvety tannins, impressive concentration and exceptional balance. Layers of black cherry, blackberry and wild berry fruits unfold across the palate, supported by subtle spice, earthy complexity and a finely detailed mineral backbone. The warmth of the 2017 vintage provides generous fruit and a supple texture, while the domaine’s traditional long élevage contributes remarkable depth and integration. The tannins have begun to soften beautifully with bottle age, leading to a long, seamless and persistent finish marked by lingering notes of dark fruits, spice, sous-bois and crushed stone. The style is powerful yet graceful, combining the generosity of Échezeaux with the elegance that has become the hallmark of Confuron-Cotetidot. Burghound has described the estate’s Échezeaux as a robust, old-school style with impressive structure and longevity.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an outstanding choice for collectors seeking a traditionally made Grand Cru Burgundy with genuine pedigree. Compared to many modern, fruit-forward interpretations of Échezeaux, Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot offers greater savoury complexity, structure and classical Burgundian character while still delivering remarkable perfume and finesse. With the benefit of bottle age, the 2017 vintage is entering a wonderful drinking window, where the fruit and tannins are beginning to harmonise while retaining the structure for many more years of development. Drink now with 2–3 hours of decanting or cellar confidently through to 2042 and beyond. Perfect with roast pigeon, duck breast, venison, beef Wellington, wild mushrooms, truffle-infused dishes or the finest French cuisine.
