The 2010 Barranco Oscuro La Familia is a distinctive high-altitude red from the Alpujarra of Granada in southern Spain. Based primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it comes from vines planted around 1,300 metres above sea level on schist and clay soils. It shows concentrated blackberry and blackcurrant alongside pepper, dried herbs, leather and earthy, savoury notes.
On the palate, it is powerful and structured yet retains impressive freshness, with concentrated dark fruit supported by vibrant acidity and firm, mature tannins. The grapes are destemmed and naturally fermented in stainless steel with manual punch-downs before approximately 24 months of maturation in old barrels. Extended bottle age has brought further savoury complexity while preserving the wine’s depth and structure.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for drinkers interested in mature, naturally made Spanish reds with distinctive high-altitude character. Its combination of concentrated dark fruit, structured tannins and developed savoury notes makes it particularly compelling with food. Ideal with grilled beef, slow-cooked lamb, game, braised meats, mushroom dishes or aged Manchego.
