The 2021 Two Paddocks “The First Paddock” Pinot Noir is a flagship single-vineyard wine from Central Otago, sourced from the estate’s original vineyard planted in 1993 in Gibbston Valley. Produced only in exceptional vintages, it represents the purest expression of this historic site, combining old-vine depth with a refined, Burgundian-inspired style.
The nose is highly perfumed and complex, showing redcurrant, cherry and dark berry fruit, layered with forest floor, Asian spice and subtle herbal notes. There is a distinctive savoury edge with floral lift, reflecting both site and whole-bunch fermentation influence.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a silky, seamless texture and fine, velvety tannins. Red and dark fruit are supported by fresh acidity and spice-driven complexity, leading to a long, elegant and poised finish. The wine shows both finesse and underlying structure, with excellent balance and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a serious single-vineyard Central Otago Pinot Noir that we position at the top tier of New Zealand Pinot. Compared to the Picnic or Estate wines, this is more structured, more complex and more cellar-worthy. Stylistically, it sits closer to Burgundy — with more savoury depth and precision — rather than fruit-forward New World Pinot. It’s ideal for customers who already appreciate Pinot Noir and want to step into something more site-driven and collectible. Drink with decanting now or cellar for 8–12+ years. Perfect with duck, game birds, mushroom dishes or fine dining.
