The 2018 Lethbridge Hugo George Sangiovese Merlot is a rare and highly distinctive blend from one of Geelong’s most respected producers. Not made every vintage, this wine reflects a thoughtful, site-driven approach, combining Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Franc into a style that bridges Italian structure with Australian generosity. The 2018 vintage, with its extended warm ripening into autumn, allowed for excellent flavour concentration and natural balance. The nose is complex and savoury, revealing sour cherry, plum and cranberry layered with lavender, dried herbs and subtle spice. There is an underlying depth with notes of cedar, earth and a distinctive smoky nuance, adding intrigue and a slightly rustic, Old World character.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fine, structured tannins and bright acidity — driven largely by the Sangiovese component — balanced by the plushness of Merlot. At Wine More Cellars, this is a standout Italian-inspired blend that offers both structure and approachability. Compared to classic Tuscan styles, it is slightly more generous and polished, while still retaining the savoury edge and acidity that make it so food-friendly. Drinking beautifully now with some development, but still capable of further evolution through 2028+. Perfect with tomato-based dishes, lamb ragù, woodfired pizza or aged cheeses.
