The 2023 Saint-Damien “Clovis Saurel” is the flagship cuvée of the estate, crafted from 100% old-vine Grenache (some dating back to the 1940s) grown on sandy clay soils in Gigondas. It represents one of the purest and most refined expressions of Grenache in the Southern Rhône, combining concentration with remarkable elegance.
The nose is highly perfumed and expressive, showing wild strawberry, raspberry and black cherry, layered with violet, white pepper, garrigue herbs and subtle mineral notes. There is a lifted, floral and spice-driven aromatic profile, with a clear sense of purity and terroir expression.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a silky yet structured texture and fine, refined tannins. Red and dark fruit, spice and mineral nuances are supported by fresh acidity, leading to a long, elegant and layered finish. The 2023 vintage stands out for its balance — combining richness with precision and a more lifted, refined style compared to heavier Rhône years.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a top-tier Gigondas and one of the purest Grenache expressions we offer — essentially a “mini Châteauneuf-du-Pape flagship” but with more focus and finesse. Compared to Les Souteyrades, this is more elegant and perfumed, while still delivering depth and ageing potential. It’s ideal for customers who love Rhône wines but want something more refined, floral and terroir-driven. This is not about heaviness — it’s about purity, spice and precision. Drink with decanting now or cellar for 10–15+ years. Perfect with lamb, game, slow-cooked dishes or classic French cuisine.
